The panel is in the basket. The balcony gets the sun. There is a socket just inside the door.
For a homeowner, the next step looks obvious.
For an electrician, there is another question: is the installation behind that socket suitable?
That is the important detail in the plug-in solar story. A simpler way to generate electricity does not make every home the same.
What actually changed?
The new regulations came into force on 27 August 2026, opening the way for compliant plug-in solar devices to be bought and used across Great Britain. This is no longer just a proposal. UK Parliament commencement timeline, government rollout announcement.
But the word compliant matters. The government's interim product specification sets requirements for these devices. The new framework is not permission to connect any solar kit found online, and it does not extend to plug-in batteries. Government product specification and consultation outcome.
Nor should readers apply the Great Britain rollout to Northern Ireland. Energy Saving Trust's current guidance says plug-in solar is not yet permitted for use there. Energy Saving Trust checklist.
Why is the IET advising an electrical check?
On launch day, the Institution of Engineering and Technology advised householders to have their installation assessed by a competent electrician before buying or connecting a plug-in solar unit.
Its concern is the installation, not just the product. Plug-in solar introduces another electricity source into the home's circuits. Existing protection must be suitable for that arrangement. The IET also points out that RCDs, the devices that rapidly disconnect electricity in certain fault conditions, are not all interchangeable. Having one does not, by itself, establish suitability. There are two different questions here:
- Does this particular product meet the rules?
- Is this particular property suitable for it?
Answering the first does not automatically answer the second.
That distinction is more useful than either extreme: “plug it in anywhere” or “plug-in solar is dangerous”.
The 800W detail people can miss
The 800W limit concerns the power entering the home's socket. The panels' combined rating can be higher because the microinverter limits the output. Comparing the number printed on a panel with the permitted socket output can therefore be misleading. Check the complete device and its documentation, not one headline figure. Four things to check before spending money
1. The exact product. Check the make and model against the Energy Networks Association device register linked from the official consumer checklist. A marketplace description alone is not enough. Energy Saving Trust product checks.
2. The property and proposed connection. Arrange the suitability assessment recommended by the IET. Do not treat a photograph of the consumer unit as a complete inspection. IET suitability advice.
3. The permissions. A balcony or outside wall may not be yours to alter freely. Landlord, freeholder, planning or listed-building permission may be relevant. The government advises checking before purchase or installation. Government rollout announcement.
4. The instructions and registration. The consumer checklist calls for direct connection to a suitable socket, not an extension lead or adaptor, and says the device must be registered. These are starting points for a conversation, not a DIY inspection procedure or a complete installation specification.
For electricians: sell clarity, not a scare story
The strongest response to a customer enquiry is a clear scope of work.
Ask which device they are considering and where they intend to use it. Explain what your assessment covers, what it does not cover, what you will charge and what record they will receive. If further work is needed, explain the finding before quoting the remedy.
Do not turn the IET's advice into an unsupported claim that every purchaser now has a legal duty to buy a new EICR. Equally, do not promise that an existing report answers every question about a proposed new source of electricity. The assessment and any documentation must match the actual circumstances and work undertaken.
A short question worth asking the customer is:
“Have you checked the home as carefully as you checked the panel?”
It opens the right conversation without inventing a danger or a compulsory sale.
Keep the job record as clear as the advice
